Why Prior Mammograms Matter

Why Prior Mammograms Matter: The Value of Comparison in Breast Imaging

When you come in for a mammogram, you may be asked if you have had previous breast imaging done—and if so, when & where. While it might seem like a routine question, your prior mammograms play an important role in ensuring the most accurate results.

A Baseline for Your Breast Health

Every person’s breast tissue is unique. Prior mammograms give radiologists a baseline, allowing them to understand what is normal for you.

By comparing your current images to prior ones, radiologists can look for even the smallest changes over time, something that may not be noticeable when reviewing a single exam on its own.

Detecting Change Over Time

Breast tissue can change gradually, and not all changes are cause for concern. Having prior images helps radiologists distinguish between stable, long-standing findings and new developments that may need closer attention.

This ability to track changes over time is one of the most valuable aspects of breast imaging.

Reducing Unnecessary Callbacks

One of the most common concerns patients have after a mammogram is being called back for additional imaging. In many cases, this happens because there are no prior images available for comparison.

With previous mammograms on hand, radiologists can often confirm that an area has remained unchanged, helping to reduce unnecessary follow-up exams and easing patient anxiety.

Supporting Early and Accurate Detection

Early detection is critical in breast health, but accuracy is just as important. Comparing current and prior mammograms allows radiologists to identify subtle changes and make more informed recommendations.

This leads to more confident interpretations and better overall care.

How You Can Help

If you’ve had a mammogram at another facility, helping ensure those images are available for your appointment can make a meaningful difference.

You can:

  • Request your prior images be sent to your current imaging center
  • Bring a copy of your images and reports if needed
  • Let your care team know where previous exams were performed

Our Commitment to You

At Eastern Radiologists Breast Imaging Center, we are committed to providing accurate, thorough breast imaging. Reviewing prior mammograms whenever possible allows us to deliver the most accurate and personalized interpretation of your exam.

Taking this extra step of bringing your prior images, or at least providing the location and date, can make your mammogram more effective, more efficient, and more reassuring. It also allows the radiologist to interpret your exam and provide your results in a timely manner.
