Prostate Artery Embolization

How Prostate Artery Embolization is Changing Lives

For many men, an enlarged prostate—known medically as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—is more than just a medical condition. It’s a daily disruption that can affect sleep, travel, social life, and overall well-being. Traditional treatment options, such as medication or surgery, often come with side effects or long recovery times. But a newer, minimally invasive procedure called Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is giving men their freedom back.

What is Prostate Artery Embolization?

PAE is an outpatient procedure performed by an interventional radiologist. The physician uses a tiny catheter inserted through the groin to deliver microscopic particles into the artery feeding the prostate. These particles plug the artery, blocking blood flow. This is called embolization. This reduces blood flow to the prostate, causing it to shrink naturally over time.

The procedure usually only takes 1-2 hours and patients are typically able to go home the same day without significant pain or recovery process. Importantly, PAE also lowers the risk of side effects such as sexual dysfunction and urinary incontinence, which are concerns for many men considering treatment.

A Real-Life Story of Renewal

One inspiring example of PAE’s impact is the story of Marvin Mullen, shared by ECU Health. Marvin, an 81-year-old retired forensic scientist, struggled with severe symptoms of BPH that kept him from enjoying his retirement, traveling, and even spending time with his family. After undergoing PAE with Dr. Karl Chiang, Chief of Interventional Radiology at ECU Health, Marvin noticed remarkable improvements within weeks.

As Marvin explained, “After a couple of days, it was hardly an issue anymore. By the time a month had gone by, there was significant change.” He’s now back on the golf course, attending events, and living life without the constant worry of bathroom access.

Who Can Benefit from PAE?

PAE may be a good fit for men who:

  • Experience frequent or urgent urination that interferes with daily life
  • Want to avoid invasive surgery or lengthy recovery
  • Have concerns about side effects from other procedures
  • Are seeking an outpatient solution with proven results

A consultation with a urologist is essential to determine if PAE is the right choice.

Looking Ahead

Prostate Artery Embolization represents more than just a new medical procedure—it represents hope for men who feel their lives are being limited by BPH. As more hospitals and medical facilities offer this treatment, more patients are discovering a pathway back to the activities and independence they value most.
